Beating Roulette
By Dario Markovinovic
I was browsing the Internet the other day and suddenly I stumbled upon a website promising to make me rich within a matter of weeks. I know that there are a lot of them all over the internet but there was something about this one that really intrigued me, so I decided to take a look at it. After checking out what it was offering, basically, the guy was trying to convince people that he could teach them how to beat the roulette. After reading a bit further, I was shocked to see that the system this guy really "invented" is the martingale system. The martingale system is a betting system where you will double your bet every time you lose, so that every time you win any bet, you are profiting x units. Example, you bet $1 and lose, you bet $2 and lose, you bet $4 and win. Not only have you recuperated your $3 losses, but you made a $1 profit. Then, I thought to myself, what about these poor people that have no clue and that will probably think "Wow you can't lose with this!" Although, the sad truth is YOU CAN LOSE!! And you can lose a lot! There is a phrase I once read and that I will never forget. "The only way to beat the roulette is if you steal chips while the croupier isn't looking." The roulette is just about the perfect game where no matter how you play, no matter how much you bet, no matter what betting system you use.. you will simply NEVER win. If you really take the time to realise what your chances are to make money from the martingale system, you will realise this (say we play European rouette (single zero)) If you simply play on red with betting units of $1 and the table limits are $1-$200 (this is somewhat exaggerated). So you basically have to dodge a losing streak of 8 spins. The odds of that happening are (19/37)^8 = 0.004835206 = 0.4835%. While this doesn't happen, you will have won $1 every time the ball falls on red. Although, when this happens, you will have lost a total of $(1+2+4+8+16+32+64+128) = $255 So you have to win 256 times and lose the 257th to make money in the long run. Although, chances of you losing $255 are 100/0.4835 = 1 in 207 approximately. You clearly see that no matter how you bet, you will never be able to beat roulette. Fact is, if you bet higher amounts, you will likely lose a lot faster than if you bet a regular bet consistently, the reason for this is that by betting higher amounts, you increase yuor average bet and therefore, you increase the total amount that the casino makes on every one of your bets. Basically, what I have tried to show you is that no betting system will ever beat the casinos, no matter how good you think it is. Making money in casinos is extremely difficult and before considering getting rich beating them, I urge you to think again.
